Amar Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji By Giani Tirlok Singh ji.
Baba Deep Singh is one of the most respected martyrs in Sikh history. Throughout his life, he set an example in the life of the spirit of the saint-soldier of Khalsa. He joined Guru Gobind Singh and then Baba Banda Singh Bahadur to fight in several wars against the Mughals. When Ahmad Shah Abdali returned from Kabul, after capturing hundreds of Hindu men and women as slaves, Baba Deep Singh rescued them by boldly confronting the Afghan army. He lately sacrificed his life at the age of seventy-five when he organized a run attack on the Afghans of the Harmandir Sahib, the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, thus returning him to the Sikhs. Baba Deep Singh was a scholar in Sikh theology as well as his command in several languages, such as Gurmuji, Sanskrit, Persian (Farsi) and Arabic. He helped Bhai Mani Singh copy the Pothi Sahib (now called Guru Granth Sahib) when it was dictated by Guru Gobind Singh in Damdama Sahib. Baba Deep Singh also established three taksals (academies) to blur gurbani and Sikh philosophy. To this day, these taksals continue to render an invaluable service.
